Details
Kiama Chief Executive Officer, Jane Stroud wrote to Shoalhaven City Council on 28 May 2025 outlining Kiama Councils recent resolution to write to the Hon Michael Daley Attorney General expressing support for an Amendment to Regulation 5(a) of the Drug Court Regulation 2020 to expand eligibility to the Illawarra Shoalhaven region.
Drug and drug-related social, and criminal issues are common and increasing concerns across the Illawarra Shoalhaven region, which weigh heavily on Police, housing and social services and present significant risk’s to, and have a profound impact on, the community.
The Shoalhaven at present has experienced a notable increase in drug–related antisocial behaviours particularly in the CBD, which Council is aware of from regular engagement with the local Police.
An amendment to Regulation 5(a) allowing for expansion of the Drug Court Regulation 2020 to the Illawarra Shoalhaven Region would strengthen the collective fight against drugs and addressing drug–related behaviour and social issues. If passed this amendment would add much needed additional resources and increase the options when addressing drug–related issues affecting our communities.
I urge the Shoalhaven to stand united with Kiama, and the other Illawarra councils and advocate to the Attorney General for this much needed amendment.
