CBD18.59 Proposed O'Keefe Avenue Traffic Lights

Recommendation (Item to be determined under delegated authority) That the proposed position of the O’Keefe Avenue traffic lights be moved slightly west to coincide with the Nowra Taxi Rank location.

Details
The current proposal is to site the proposed traffic lights aligned with the current crossing.
The current position of the crossing in reality supports only one centre. By removing the current crossing and replacing with traffic lights in line with the Nowra Taxi Rank station, the new positioning would suit more pedestrians (shoppers utilising shops/services south of the current) and those patrons from the Shoalhaven Ex-Serviceman’s Club.
Director – Assets & Works comments:
This is a project that Council is applying for grant funding in the 2019/20 financial year. It still needs to be reviewed by RMS and the Centre for Road Safety and Council will not know until next year if our application is successful.
The current shopping arrangement (pedestrian access to Coles) makes this location the preferred crossing site for pedestrians and until this desire line is addressed pedestrians will continue to cross at this location. This project is about addressing a real, current safety issue.
Traffic Lights at the Junction and O’Keefe intersection are part of a preferred long term strategic option for CBD improvements.
As indicated in Attachment 1, Council is interested in receiving the community’s opinion regarding this project.
