Details
On Friday 11 October 2024 I had pleasure of being invited to attend and take part in the welcoming ceremony of the Yila Healing Trail Corroboree at Paringa Park Nowra as my first official community engagement as Mayor of the Shoalhaven.
It was an honour to receive a Coolamon, hand crafted by Ronald McLeod from wood lifted from the 2019 -20 Currowan fires symbolising that Council, and the Aboriginal Community are walking together caring for Country. Made from Red Gum, it also symbolises the healing that has happened and is still ongoing following Black Summer and reminds us that the healing needs to continue and be amplified.
I welcomed the opportunity as Mayor to share with the community how proud I am of Councils commitment to working with community on our cultural priorities, especially Councils commitment to our first Reconciliation Action Plan.
Highlighting the importance of the work and collaboration already undertaken by representatives from the Aboriginal Advisory Committee, and our staff who are part of the Working Group and Yarning Group, Aboriginal Community members, Elders and services that have volunteered their time to help Council develop this significant document. A great collective effort and demonstration of our dedication to inclusivity and collaboration.
