Congratulations to the Shoalhaven Multicultural Group for another fantastic Harmony Day event, held in the Nowra East Public School Hall. Nowra East Pride, Shoalhaven Neighbourhood Services and Nowra East Public School as Collaborating partners made the event happen.
The Multicultural Group organised a fantastic event at Nowra East Public School on 23 March for Harmony Day. Harmony Day is internationally recognised as a day for celebrating cultural diversity. The Shoalhaven Multicultural Group is an unfunded Community Group that aims to advocate, support and promote equality for the multicultural community. The group also works in collaboration with Settlement Services International (SSI) and Ability Links to assist community members to meet up with one another from a similar cultural background. The Committee also assists migrants to seek support in respect to visa issues.
In the current financial year Council supported this group through our Community Grants Program, providing $2,000 to contribute to the facilitation of activities and events that promote an inclusive Shoalhaven and celebrate cultural diversity.
The Harmony Day celebration included members of the community from Nepal, Philippines, Tibet, Malaysia just to name a few, many of these people I have had the pleasure to conduct citizenship’s ceremonies for. I commend the committee for their outstanding efforts in breaking down cultural barriers in the Shoalhaven as our community becomes more culturally diverse.
