MM16.14    Mayoral Minute - Improvements to Nowra Showground

HPERM Ref:      D16/364744

Recommendation

That staff prepare a report to Council on a suite of improvements and approximate costs that could improve the Nowra Showgrounds, including but not limited to improving the look out and picnic facilities, sealing of the roads within the showgrounds, landscaping and demarcation for camping.

Details

As Council continues to work through the issues of homelessness in the Shoalhaven, the Nowra Showground has gained a lot of unnecessary criticism. However the Showground is looking somewhat tired and could do with some rejuvenation. Consideration of the 17/18 budget is almost upon Council and it would be timely to have some idea of the quantum of different projects that would improve the Showgrounds and the priority (via discussions with the committee).

The text in italics in the paragraph above was amended by Clr Findley at the meeting 22 November 2016.

MM16.15    Mayoral Minute - Southern Cross Community Housing & Shoalhaven City Council at Bomaderry

HPERM Ref:      D16/364762

Recommendation

That the General Manager submit to the NSW Government for funding consideration the application that was previously submitted in 2013 by Southern Cross Community Housing and Council for the Restart NSW – Illawarra Infrastructure Fund.  The application needs to be given to the Premier, Minister for Housing, and any other Minister who may have a funding source such as Family and Community Services.

Details

The issue of homelessness is a statewide issue driven mostly by the lack of affordable housing either for rent or purchase. The State Government could show its commitment to alleviating the issues in the Shoalhaven by collaborating with Council and the Southern Cross to fund this much needed housing project.

In July 2013, Council endorsed the application over its land in Coomea Street, Bomaderry.  The original application proposed to construct 16 accommodation units, two shops and a training room
